MA Translation student receives recognition for innovative research

Kathleen Cyr, MA Specialised Translation student, has received a special commendation from the Institute of Translation and Interpreting for her MA dissertation on the translation of Japanese TV shows.

Kathleen Cyr's MA work on translating Japanese TV shows was awarded a special commendation at the 2017 ITI awards, after being judged by the UK's association of translators and interpreters as ‘an excellent example for the profession and deserving of recognition’.

Her dissertation, entitled Open caption Telops on Japanese variety shows: what they are, why they matter, and how to translate them, examines the use of brightly coloured text in Japanese television and the challenges involved in their translation. Cyr's research unveils a set of Creative Subtitling Guidelines to help subtitlers and translators translate these features, typical of Japanese TV, more closely.

Dr Dionysios Kapsaskis, Senior Lecturer in Specialised Translation said ‘Kathleen's success reflects the quality of research and teaching of the MA Specialised Translation at Roehampton. Her work is thoroughly original, and leads the way for future study of the topic’.
