Roehampton launches film festival competition

The Department of Media, Culture and Language is inviting GCSE and sixth form pupils around England to participate in the competition as part of an AHRC funded project.

The project, Connecta Film Competition, is part of the Creative Multilingualism programme and will invite pupils to produce their own films with the support of the University. As a Creative Multilingualism project, all films will need to feature at least two languages, whether through spoken dialogue, subtitling or a mix of both, and the films must be accessible with subtitles.

The project will focus on the students’ language experience and using it to connect and communicate by producing their own films.  The teams of students from participating schools will be supported by Roehampton lecturers from the Department through all stages of film production including how to script, shoot, edit and subtitle a film. The shortlisted teams will be invited to participate in a Film Festival at Roehampton where their films will be screened and the winners announced.

Inma Pedregosa, senior lecturer in translation says ‘we are very excited to develop online materials and tuition for teachers to use in the classroom and students to create their own films. We also would like to take this opportunity to raise awareness about accessible film making.  At Roehampton we are passionate about languages and hope that this project allows pupils to show what they can do with languages.’
