Roehampton students take over the Horniman Museum

The Horniman Museum partnered with the University of Roehampton for Neon Late, an event with a full spectrum of performances, music and tours on the theme of neon held at the beginning of March. 

Dr Lis Austin, Senior Lecturer in the Drama, Theatre and Performance Department was the Creative Producer of the event, and worked with Drama and Dance students as well as alumni to devise an evening of performances centred on the theme of neon.

Neon Late celebrated the opening of the Horniman Museum’s new exhibition, Colour: The Rainbow Revealed. Roehampton Drama students opened the night with Half a Pill of Pink, an ensemble theatre collective with text from Jalice Coral. They returned for the evening finale Do I Look Like a Palm Tree, a colourful performance interspersed with music and dancing.

Austin incorporated a diversity of acts including performances from Roehampton Drama Alumni; singer Storm Greenword, spoken word artist Jalice Coral, and poi and pole artist Rosie Taylor. There was also colourful tours of the Natural History Gallery, UV face painting, and an interactive workshop involving Growhampton Rainbow Chard.

Roehampton alumna Rosie Taylor expressed ‘I had a great time being part of Neon Late and it was wonderful to see everyone's different interpretations of the theme’.

Neon Late followed Roehampton Drama Department's collaboration with The People Show at The Horniman Museum last year. Since then, The New York Times named the Horniman Museum and Gardens as one of the 10 coolest museums in the world. Click here to view photos of Neon Late at The Horniman Museum.
