Work commences on Roehampton’s state-of-the-art media hub

Roehampton’s plans to create a brand new home for the Department of Media, Culture and Languages, on Digby Stuart College have commenced.

The project will create a dedicated hub for state-of-the-art film, television, photographic and sound studios, editing suites, a flexible creative space for students and a 90-seat cinema, all built around a glazed courtyard. It has been designed to be used for teaching, collaborative and independent learning, and promises to enhance students’ learning experience.

The new facilities will be housed in Roehampton’s Harvey building, which was the home of the University library until autumn 2017 when it moved to a specially built new building. The site will undergo a complete internal renovation and restructure and will be led by architects Rivington Street Studio, with input from acoustic and theatre specialists to ensure the facilities are industry-standard.

The building will also house a number of student-facing support facilities, including audio-visual, digital learning and IT support services. Facilities will begin to open for teaching at the beginning of the 2019/20 academic year.

The Department of Media, Culture and Languages offers career-focused degrees in Media, Film Photography, Languages and Linguistics. Roehampton is currently ranked in the top 3 universities in London for Journalism, Film Production and Photography (Guardian University Guide 2018).

The University has recently launched a new BA in Digital Media, designed to equip students with the digital communication skills required for a successful career in the digital media industry.
