Dr Sandy Urquhart presents at the launch event.

Attending the launch event were forty-two students in Year 12 and their families. Students heard about the essential skills they would be learning to put law into practice. Presenters included Rachel Leighton, Schools and Colleges Engagement Manager, Dr Sandy Urquhart, Senior Lecturer in Law, and previous participants from the programme.

Students that participate in the programme will experience  subject masterclasses led by academics, mentoring from law students, a one-week experience placement at a leading law firm, the chance to attend a four-day residential conference with networking opportunities, and visits to legal landmarks including the Inner Temple and the Supreme Court.

Dr Sandy Urquhart said ‘We are delighted to welcome so many students, and their parents, who are so enthusiastic to start on this programme. Our focus on “law in practice” style activities offers students many opportunities to gain practical law experience, build confidence, increase their knowledge of law, and meet with our current law students and supportive law academics.’

The University of Roehampton is a partner of the Sutton Trust’s Pathways to Law Programme. The programme aims to inspire and support students to explore a range of careers in law and build essential knowledge, skills and confidence required to go on to higher education and the world of work.

Rachel Leighton, Schools and Colleges Engagement Manager said ‘This is an important programme at the University to create new opportunities for students to gain access to the legal sector and to support students to achieve their full potential.’

The programme is a partnership between the Schools and Colleges Engagement Team, the Roehampton Law School and the Sutton Trust. Several universities across the UK take part in the programme including Oxford, Manchester and Bristol.

Roehampton Law School provides students with the skills they need to succeed, through teaching that focuses on how to practise the law and applying it to everyday life.
