Roehampton Business School students took advantage of a day of workshops, 1:1 sessions with leaders from top companies, and a panel discussion at annual employability event ‘Land that Job’ aimed at providing them with the best tips on seeking out and landing their ideal job.

This year the panel featured business leaders such as Terry Hook, CEO of bank regulation compliance agency aSourceGlobal, and Bob McDowell, Director of Strategy at Haymarket Media group, a major international publishing company. Also on the panel was Jordine Bartlett, Roehampton graduate and Editor of Fashion, Lifestyle and Music Africa at the Financial Times.

All the panellists highlighted the importance of graduates’ motivation and attitude. Terry Hook spoke of the importance of potential employees’ way of thinking, which he said was a key added value that the University offers to students. The panellists also agreed it was important to think about the ‘value-proposition’, between employer and graduate. Robert Head, of HR company Neo Reward, said, “The interview is for both you and the employer to find out if you would work together well. If you know about the culture of the organisation, you can show how your skills and personality would fit in there.”

Abdirahman Mumin, a third year Business Management student said ‘Jordine Bartlett did many different things to gain as much experience as possible before landing her dream job, and all of the panellists agreed that experience is key to securing a job, which I found very inspiring. I am going to work on getting as much experience as possible, so I can demonstrate to potential employers that I have the skills they are looking for’.

Jordine Bartlett returned to Roehampton to offer advice to current students. She currently has two Roehampton students on internships with her new project, covering luxury wedding content for the FT. She said, ‘They had showed a keenness for gathering experience, wherever it may appear in life, which I found impressive, and it also showed their self-recognition of their skills. I would encourage everyone to seek out experience whenever possible and whatever it is.’

Other companies represented at the event were Neo Reward Ltd, CBRE, Ludlow Thompson, Spencer Park and Thevaluespace Ltd.

Professor Sharon Mavin, Director of Roehampton Business School says “It is very important to us that our students graduate ‘business-ready’, with the skills, knowledge and attitude to quickly integrate into the world of work. Events like Land That Job complement our degrees, which are designed to develop graduates who can add value to organisations and society.”
