The Centre for Research in Film and Audiovisual Cultures will welcome Women Over Fifty Film Festival founder and director Nuala O’Sullivan for a seminar and screenings event.

Nuala O’Sullivan founded the Women Over Fifty Film Festival (WOFFF) in 2015, celebrating and showcasing the work of women over fifty in the film industry, whether they occupy a key creative role, or appear as a central subject in the film itself.  The festival was founded in 2015 at a time when film and TV industries were starting to be held more accountable for the lack of diversity and inclusivity evident within them, including the marginalisation of older women.

At the event at Roehampton, taking place on February 5, Dr Deborah Jermyn will talk with Nuala O’Sullivan about how and why she established WOFFF and the work the festival does to address diversity and inclusivity in the film industry, accompanied by a number of screenings.

Dr Jermyn says ‘events such as this strengthen the relationship between the research that takes place at Roehampton on various issues such as women in the media, and organisations that facilitate real-world impact and change’.

Nuala O’Sullivan says ‘WOFFF highlights and celebrates the work of older women in front of and behind the camera. Dr Deborah Jermyn has been collaborating with WOFFF since 2017. We are delighted to be continuing this relationship by participating in this University of Roehampton seminar - screening short films and discussing representation on both sides of the camera.’
