Roehampton Lecturer visits Westminster

Dr Sue Reeves from the Department of Life Sciences is visiting Baroness Jenkin of Kennington in the House of Lords this week as part of the Royal Society Pairing Scheme.

During her visit, Sue will shadow Baroness Jenkin and learn about her work, observe meetings and Select Committees as well participate in a mock Select Committee on scientific responsibility.

Dr Sue Reeves said: “In my field of nutrition there are many policies and papers aimed at reducing obesity and encouraging healthy eating. I am keen to learn how such policies are developed and how research informs policy decisions.  I would also like to understand how scientists and government can work together to improve public understanding, public health and reduce the rates of obesity in the UK”.

The visit is part of a unique pairing scheme run by the Royal Society, the UK’s national academy of science, with support from the Government Science & Engineering (GSE) profession.  The Royal Society’s pairing scheme, which started in 2001, aims to build bridges between parliamentarians, civil servants and some of the best scientists in the UK.

The Department of Life Sciences offers an outstanding undergraduate degree in Nutrition and Health and staff undertake world-class research which changes lives and furthers our understanding of science.
