Our postgraduate MSc Occupational and Business Psychology programme is the most appropriate professional training to apply the science of psychology to business and occupational settings, while retaining the academic rigours of a masters-level programme.

Professional Development Programme

Through this mandatory, co-curricular module, you’ll practice and enhance your core skills in the following areas:

  • Presenting
  • Critical writing
  • Research

You’ll also work on negotiation techniques, developing the credibility of your arguments to give you the competitive edge.

Professional placement

If you want to dip your toes into the working world before you graduate, you can take an optional placement in Year 2. Where possible, this will be tailored to your interests and career aspirations. And wherever your placement takes you, it will enable you to:

  • Develop practical problem-solving skills in a professional context
  • Apply learned concepts, and
  • Gain a better understanding of your own employability

Professional accreditation

This programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and Association for Business Psychology (ABP), this programme can be a step towards becoming either a Chartered Occupational Psychologist or Business Psychologist.

How you'll learn

Our MSc Occupational and Business Psychology degree will help you understand how psychology can be applied to work and business, such as management consultants, executive coaches, HR practitioners, career advisors, business executives and proprietors.

You'll cover the theoretical areas specified by the Division of Occupational Psychology of the BSP as a necessary basis for occupational psychology Chartership.

You'll be introduced to practical and professional issues in occupational and business psychology throughout the programme, with ‘organisational visits’ and a specific assessed component ’evidence informed practice’. 

You’ll complete a consultancy project in a particular field of interest, such as:

  • Global financial management
  • Marketing
  • Human resources

This enables you to consolidate your knowledge and skills through the in-depth, independent study of a specific organisational issue, with or without an associated internship.

You could also complete a dissertation on a topic of your choice at the end of your course.

Specific Entry Requirements

Minimum 2.2 honours degree in Psychology, Business Management or Human Resource Management.

Please note: those entering with a psychology degree recognised by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as conferring the Graduate Basis for Chartership (GBC), will be able to use credits obtained from this programme to apply to do the Stage 2 Qualification in Occupational Psychology and apply for Chartership status with the BPS after completing the course.

Validation and curriculum review

What is validation?
Validation is a formal process through which the University approves a programme (content, teaching, learning and assessment) as being of appropriate standard and quality. This is a normal process used throughout the university sector.

What is curriculum review?
Curriculum review is the regular and systematic monitoring and reviewing of programmes. It is a normal process in the sector and it is the way by which the university ensures that your course remains up-to-date and relevant. The process may result in changes to the content, structure and/or assessment of the programme.
