At Roehampton our courses are designed with you in mind, which is why we have a range of options for students looking for pathways towards studying a full degree.
Our Foundation Studies: Certifcate of Higher Education (CertHE) courses are equivalent to 120 levels at Level 4 and are the same as the first year of a full-time degree. They are one-year programmes that will give you the skills and confidence you need for a particular profession, or academic subject or job. On completion you are awarded a CertHE, a standalone qualification you can use to help you enhance your career or use as a stepping stone towards studying for an undergraduate degree.
We also offer many of our undergraduate degrees with a foundation year, meaning you will enrol on a four year programme of study. This option gives you the academic and practical experience and skills you need to successfully complete your chosen degree.
If you’re an international student, our one-year International Foundation Programme, is designed to give you the knowledge and skills of our foundation year, with the added support you need to enhance the English language skills you need to successfully progress in higher education in the UK.

What is the Foundation Studies: Certificate of Higher Education?
A Foundation Studies: Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) is a one-year course that will give you the foundational learning, knowledge and skills to successfully complete your chosen degree and get the career you want.
A Foundation Studies: CertHE will:
- Give you knowledge in the subject you want to study
- Build your confidence and personal strengths
- Develop your ability to adapt your knowledge and skills in the workplace
Once you’ve completed the year, you can progress onto a degree that is related to your Foundation Studies: CertHE.
Throughout your studies, you’ll be given personal study and career support, in a friendly and welcoming community, where you can develop your interest outside your studies.
Who is this programme for?
Are you a mature student looking to return to higher education but unsure about committing to three or four years? Are you wanting to start a degree, but aren’t sure exactly what subject to commit to?
This programme is for you. It's just one year, so you will get a full taste of university life to give you the insights you need to decide whether to pursue a full degree. And if not? On successful completion you are awarded a CertHE which you can use to further your career ambitions or return to studies later in life.
