What is the Foundation Studies: Certificate of Higher Education?

A Foundation Studies: Certificate of Higher Education (CertHE) is a one-year course that will give you the foundational learning, knowledge and skills to successfully complete your chosen degree and get the career you want.

A Foundation Studies: CertHE will:

  • Give you knowledge in the subject you want to study
  • Build your confidence and personal strengths
  • Develop your ability to adapt your knowledge and skills in the workplace

Once you’ve completed the year, you can progress onto a degree that is related to your Foundation Studies: CertHE.

Throughout your studies, you’ll be given personal study and career support, in a friendly and welcoming community, where you can develop your interest outside your studies.

Who is this programme for?

Are you a mature student looking to return to higher education but unsure about committing to three or four years? Are you wanting to start a degree, but aren’t sure exactly what subject to commit to?

This programme is for you. It's just one year, so you will get a full taste of university life to give you the insights you need to decide whether to pursue a full degree. And if not? On successful completion you are awarded a CertHE which you can use to further your career ambitions or return to studies later in life.

Degrees with foundation years

We also offer a wide range of undergraduate courses with a foundation year. The subject-specific modules offered will give you a strong introduction of what you will learn on your degree.

The foundation year takes place at the beginning of a degree and extends your studies by a year.
