  • Construct a winning argument
  • Reason critically
  • Think on your feet
  • Write with precision and clarity

Politics is a central element of human society, where our most pressing issues and concerns are addressed. Through political processes, institutions and ideas, complex, diverse modern cultures identify, share and contest values and make decisions about rules to live by and about how goods will be distributed nationally and internationally.

Alongside your legal training, you’ll gain a sound grounding in the academic tradition of politics.

You’ll gain the core ‘foundations of legal knowledge’ required by the Bar Standards (BSB) to process to the second stage of vocational training required to become a barrister.

For a QLD, you must study the seven foundation subjects of legal knowledge:

  1. Public Law
  2. Law of the European Union
  3. Criminal Law
  4. Obligations (including Contract, Restitution and Tort)
  5. Property Law
  6. Equity and the Law of Trusts
  7. Legal Research

You can put these skills into practice with an optional professional placement between Years 2 and 3 of your course. Fully supported by our Placement Office, this is a chance to gain paid work experience and make valuable industry connections.

Read former law student, Julia Cwierz's blog 'My Citizens Advice Placement', where she talks about her experience of doing pro bono work with Wandsworth Citizens Advice.

Professional qualifications

If you want to train as a barrister after graduation, this course is the perfect first step as a qualifying law degree (QLD) recognised by the Bar Standards Board (BSB). Get ahead with our ‘law in practice’ learning environment.

Designed by experienced academics and practitioners, with input from our internationally renowned Centre for Human Rights and Social Justice, this degree will encourage you to see the law in the context of everyday life right from the start.

You’ll spend most of your time in face-to-face classes and workshops developing your understanding of both legal issues and the core skills and competencies legal practitioners are expected to have.
