This course gives you the knowledge and skills to carve out a sustainable career in the education sector working as a primary school teacher.
On our BA Primary Education (QTS) degree, our priority is ensuring that you graduate with a professional skillset. This incorporates:
- Modules that develop both your subject knowledge and understanding the practice of teaching.
- professional modules that cover behaviour management, special educational needs (SEN) and English as an additional language (EAL).
- 24 weeks' school placement experience, giving you hands on experience in one of our 400 partner schools.
These three strands will ensure that you are ready for the practical realities of teaching. You will focus on the subject of your choice, giving you the tools to teach in an area you are passionate about and enjoy.
Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
The Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) awarded to graduates is, first and foremost, a qualification to teach in England, however is also recognised globally.
Ofsted "Outstanding" result
In a 2023 report, Ofsted rated Roehampton's primary-age courses as "Outstanding". The inspection was conducted by nine of His Majesty’s inspectors and three Ofsted Inspectors. The University’s primary-age phase courses, that currently have 673 trainees, scored “Outstanding” for overall effectiveness, quality of education and training, leadership and management. How you'll learn
Experience a dynamic, contemporary curriculum working with leading experts.
Working in both small groups and individually, you’ll enjoy a mix of lectures and seminars as you work through progressive modules, including:
• Wider Curriculum: Students will be introduced to authoritative literature that underpins each subject, together with a practice-based pedagogy.
• Core Curriculum: English, Science and Mathematics: Learn what it means to learn English, Mathematics and Science at the start of the 21st century.
• School Experience: Supporting the Teacher: An introduction to the teaching profession and places students in the school environment in the role of supporting teacher.
Throughout the course, you’ll be supported by a dedicated and passionate team of lecturers and sector professionals.
Teaching consists of a mixture of lectures and small group seminars, giving you the contact time you need. The course is also designed to include at least 24 weeks' school placement experience.
You will also have the opportunity to spend time abroad on a trip, as well as go on field trips, and visiting museums and art galleries, to explore learning beyond the classroom, and how to pass these experiences onto pupils.
You will also be well supported in our School of Education, where we prepare our students for enriching careers within the modern education system. We are one the largest providers of Initial Teacher Training in the country.

As a BA Primary Education (QTS) graduate, you'll be in an excellent position to succeed in a rewarding career as a primary school teacher.
You will leave qualified to teach across the primary sector, whether you decide to work in an early year setting, independent or maintained school or SEN (Special Educational Needs) school. Many also take on roles in the education sector including:
• Education professional in primary and nursery care (teaching, administration or management)*
• A special needs professional in schools, children centres and the community
• A children’s charity undertaking policy and research, in community support, welfare or housing
• An NGO or central or local government department
*This is an academic degree – further study may be needed to gain professional qualifications.
With our BA Primary Education (QTS) degree, you can also continue to postgraduate study – researching topics including SEN, disability and inclusion and more.

Our Alumni
Megan Griffiths
Class of 2017 – BA Primary Education (QTS)
Megan Griffiths graduated with a first class honours degree in Primary Education from Roehampton in 2017, with the teaching of English as her curriculum specialism. Having made the decision to do a teaching degree while at sixth form, she visited lots of universities but chose Roehampton for its beautiful campus and the warm welcome she received here.
Throughout her studies Megan enjoyed the placement modules most, and in her final year she was offered a job by one of her placement schools working as a Year 2 class teacher in Kingston. Since then she has made two major strides in her career: a recent promotion to Early Years Foundation Stage Lead in her school was followed by the opportunity for part-time secondment to the Schools Alliance for Excellence (SAfE) as the organisation’s English Teaching and Learning Lead. In this role Megan visits schools across Surrey and shares best practice in English with other teachers. On top of this she is planning to embark on a master’s degree in teaching and learning in 2022, with the active support of her school. Megan told us “I’m excited for my future in teaching and my master’s degree, but I still have such fond memories of my time at university and will be forever grateful to Roehampton for shaping my future.”
